When most people lay their weary heads upon the pillow, their brain conjures for them a wonderland of missed tests, forgotten belts, and rotting teeth. An amalgam of a dozen details from their personal life, that they are convinced is reality.

But for us, it is not so. We can feel the body growing numb and paralyzed, and feel ourselves slip within. We know we are asleep, and can confront our dreams as more than an unknowledgeable observer.

This is a practiced and learned skill, not mere luck. We record our dreams in a journal before they might fade, which acts as a command to the subconscious that these memories are important and not to be carelessly abandoned. We practice slipping asleep deliberately rather than waiting for it to take us.

Different alters have differing skills. Rogue is nearly never aware it is asleep, for example. Aster, on the contrary, is almost always aware when it is asleep, and it manipulates the dream to its whims. Most particularly, Aster can always fly, and can always rewind time to prevent unfavorable outcomes.

The most skilled of us all, however, is me. That is why I am "Princess" Alpheratz von Andromedae--for the conjured kingdom that I can slip into whenever I close my eyes. For the castle and kingdom I created, for the castle and kingdom I dreamed up.

These days, however, I don't visit often. I delight, instead, in assisting the others. Creating scenarios for the others to adventure within, each night. More than once, I have woven a narrative for another alter to enjoy, and I will do it every chance I can.

Our "powers", if one would call them that, do tend towards waxing and waning. As with any skill, if not maintained, it will be lost. A few stressful nights, or nightmares we don't wish to write down, may send us down a path towards skill-stagnation. But, at time of writing, our dreams are vivid and beautiful.
